Trichomes straight, sometimes slightly bent, but not really spiral.

In Dolichospermum species the akinete is a very important feature in identifying. That is why this feature was chosen to the key, although you can’t always see any akinetes.

Well, if you can’t see any akinetes? You can still use the width of the vegetative cell and all the filters. You just fill in the width of the cell and with the filters you can narrow down the candidates effectively. By clicking on the arrows up and down on the right side of the Measured length (in this case the akinete) you can now see all the possible candidates for you the filters you have chosen and the width of the your cell :

When you have the akinete too – bingo! You get a nice short list of candidates.
